Arizona is home to the Petrified Forest National Park a national monument spanning 346 square miles in northeastern Arizona. Known for it's dramatic fossils, especially the fallen, preserved trees that thrived in the region in the late Triassic Epoch, its an incredibly beautiful but often overlooked area in Arizona. "Petrified wood is a specific type of fossilized wood that is the result of a tree or tree-like plants having been replaced by stone via a mineralization process that often includes permineralization and replacement." - Source Wikipedia. While the Petrified Vertex is made from European resin, when we cut into this material it looked incredibly similar to many of the most dramatic pieces of petrified wood we've seen on our trips to the Petrified Forest National Park.
The Petrified Vertex Special Release is our snap-cap pocket fountain pen machined from premium European resin sourced from Turner's Workshop. The material is a custom acrylic material from Erinoid similar to currently available Venus or Toffee; featuring a base black acrylic with reddish-orange-copper swirl that has copper mica throughout the material. The material cut smooth and precise on our Swiss lathes, and during the sanding and polishing showed the true luster of the material. Hand-polishing during the final step shows a brilliant chatoyance throughout the copper swirls which is bolstered by the black depth of the base material. This is the best acrylic we've received from Erinoid, on par with Omas, Delta, and Conway Stewart materials we've featured in the past.
The bodies and caps are fully-machined in-house, and each piece is then taken through a multi-step wet-sanding and polishing process with a final soft-wheel technique that brings out the shine. Select from a variety of Makrolon, aluminum, or brass grip sections to customize your pen and a variety of polished steel nibs. Each pen ships with a Schmidt K5 converter and two black Monteverde ink cartridges in our recyclable packaging.
